Among the five pillars of Islam Zakaat(Offerings) stands at the 3rd position. A fixed amount of money calculated from earnings of rich, offered to needy or poor people is termed as Zakaat. The needy people includes Wayfarer/Traveller etc also. This Zakaat need to be offered once in an year in the month of Ramadan.

Story behind Zakath

Muhammad(pbuh) went to Madinah on migration from Mecca in 622 AD. This migration in Islamic terms is called as ‘Hijrat’. The Islamic calendar starts from then only. Muslims call it Hijri.

During second year of Hijri in the month of Shawwal (ninth month of Islamic Calendar), people received an order from Allah. According to it all Muslims who are affordable need pay some amount in the name of ‘Zakat’ in their society. Zakat is as important as 5 times of Namaz in Islam. As Muslims pray 5 times a day and believe it is their duty to offer prayers, Zakaat also has its importance at the same level. In Holy Quran, it is many times said to do Namaz, along with it you can notice offering Zakath is also included many times. With this we can estimate how important a zakath in Islam.

Let us take an example from Quran in surat Al-Baqarah (2:110).

which means “And establish prayer and give zakah, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing“.
